FAQs
What topics are tested in the SQE1 mocks?
Our SQE1 mocks cover all areas of the SRA’s SQE Assessment Specifications.
This means that, for FLK1, the following are covered: * Ethics and Professional Conduct * Business Law and Practice * Dispute Resolution * Contract * Tort * The Legal System of England & Wales * Legal Services, Constitutional and Administrative law
For FLK2, the following are covered: * Ethics and Professional Conduct * Property Practice * Wills and the Administration of Estates * Solicitors Accounts * Land Law * Trusts * Criminal Law and Practice
Are your SQE1 mocks AI generated?
No. (It’s why we have just one set of mocks available – and not dozens).
What do you mean when you say you offer “Kaplan-like practice questions” and “Kaplan-style” SQE1 mocks?
Kaplan is the assessment organisation that creates and administers the SQE on behalf of the SRA. Kaplan has been the SRA’s preferred provider for qualification exams for many years.
By “Kaplan-style” we mean that our SQE1 mocks have been constructed to realistically resemble Kaplan’s SQE format – including timing, question structure and overall difficulty.
Each “Kaplan-type” question we’ve developed has been informed by:
1. our own experience sitting Kaplan legal exams (both single-best-answer and practical skills based);
2. Our many years of UK practice experience. The more you practice law, the more you appreciate the vital importance of reading closely. In our profession subtleties, nuances and words unsaid all matter! We’ve therefore woven these complexities into our SQE1 practice questions (just as Kaplan does in the real SQE).
3. The SRA’s historic guidance on what makes a realistic SQE1 question and what previously tested SQE1 questions look like.
4. Everything we’ve learned researching and writing about the SQE. We’ve been blogging about the SQE, over on The SQE Self-Study Site, since the beginning of 2022. In this time we’ve received many SRA bulletins and read many student accounts of SQE1. Needless to say, we have spent A LOT of time thinking about this exam and what makes a quality practice question. (The same thought and care that goes into our long-form SQE articles has gone into these questions).
Who are your mock exams for?
Our SQE1 Mocks are for any candidates searching for realistic SQE1 practice. They can be used both by people who are self-studying and those enrolled in prep courses – be they recent law grads, foreign-qualified lawyers, career changers, etc.
Why are your mocks so tough?
Our SQE1 mock tests aim to mimic (as closely as possible) the format and substance of actual SQE1 questions. This means, for example, that all our practice questions are single-best-answer (and more than one response may be technically correct).
We’ve had early feedback that our SQE1 mocks are challenging. Our goal is not for our practice questions to be unduly niche or tricky (this would not be helpful to anyone). Rather, all our questions are, again, designed to be as similar to actual SQE questions as possible (and SQE1 is pretty tough!)
Our questions take the single-best-answer format seriously – requiring test-takers to read carefully and separate good responses from better, more complete responses. (We believe this reflects the real exam, where candidates report that the 5-suggested answers appear as different “shades of grey,” or that the examiners seemed to be “splitting hairs”).
We also want our mocks to reflect the fact that the SRA’s FLK1 & FLK2 assessment specifications are very broad (and everything within the spec is examinable). This means that not every question in the real SQE1 will ask about run-of-the-mill concepts, like contract breach, duty of care or Part 36 offers.
Are breaches of contract and Part 36 offers important exam topics to know? Of course.
Will they show up in your actual SQE1 exam? Most likely. (They appear in our mocks too!)
However, it would be a mistake to think that only basic / big / 1L concepts will be tested in SQE1, or that the actual SQE only tests “general-ish” concepts. Kaplan SQE (who administer the SQE on behalf of the SRA) can – and do! – ask questions from any part of the vast SQE1 assessment spec. We’ve tried to craft our SQE1 mock exams in a similar way.
How long do I get access to an SQE1 mock exam?
For our 90 Question Mocks (Test A or Test B) – Purchasing one of these SQE1 mock exams will enable you to: 1. view the mock content online for 4 months and/or 2. complete & submit the mock up to 4 times (whichever occurs first).
For our 180 Question Mocks (Test A + B) – Purchasing one of these SQE1 mock exams will enable you to: 1. view the mock content online for 6 months and/or 2. complete & submit the mock up to 6 times (whichever occurs first).
Are these online mocks timed?
Yes. These are timed exams – with a maximum of 3 hours given to complete each set of 90 questions. (A timer is visible throughout the exam to assist you in managing your time).
Note, however, that it is not strictly necessary to complete 90 questions in one sitting and in one 3-hour time frame. You may ‘save’ your progress at any time when attempting a mock. i.e. pause the timer, exit the exam, and then return to it later (picking up where you left off).
How should these SQE1 mocks be used?
We recommend that you try to complete a set of 90 questions, in a closed-book fashion, within 2 hrs 33 mins. 2 hrs 33 mins is the amount of time candidates are given to complete 90 MCQs in an actual, half-day, SQE1 session.
